three modern classics inspired by the great super tournaments of our time. redesigned and reimagined by tempest.
Tempest London 2013
Championship Chess Set
Inspired by the famous 2013 World Championship Candidates match held in London England just over a decade ago. Tempest has re-imagined every aspect of the famous Staunton design variant which debuted at that tournament. A tournament in which a young Magnus Carlsen finally broke through, as anticipated, then further went on to challenge and decisively defeat then world champion Vishy Anand to claim his first of many FIDE world championship titles to come. Tempest’s re-design features all-original fierce knights, diminutive pawns, more straight-forward/unadorned rooks, simplified bishop cuts, and signature Tempest-cross king’s crowns.
Tempest Zagreb 1959
Championship Chess Set
Inspired by the famous 1959 World Championship Candidates super-tournament where this modern Staunton silhouette debuted. The tournament was held in Zagreb, Croatia. The Magician from Riga, Mikhail Tal won in a strong field full of world champions, past & future. This minimalist modern design was a smash hit with both grandmasters and fans alike. The alternating colors of the bishops’, kings’, and queens’ crowns add an eastern European charm while arguably adding clarity: a charming cold-war era detail that distinguishes this set without compromising its modern, playable design. Incidentally, it was also Fischer’s favorite chess set.
Tempest Reykjavik 1972
Championship Chess Set
Inspired by the famous 1972 World Championship match between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky (aka The Match of the Century). At the height of the cold war, a scrappy kid from Brooklyn, Bobby Fischer, single-handedly rose to the highest rating ever achieved at that time, defeating every grandmaster and every soviet champion in his way before decisively clenching the world championship title from Boris Spassky in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 1972. The set used was specially designed for this event and Tempest has reimagined it for the modern era. The set is beautiful in its straightforwardness, one might even say iconic. Simultaneously minimalist and thoroughly modern.
